MX-Crossport concept to star at 2006 Melbourne International Motor Show

Mazda Australia has been given the green light to import Mazda's all-new crossover SUV, the CX-7. It is expected to go on sale during the first half of 2007.

While technical details are yet to be revealed, the CX-7 will remain faithful to the Zoom-Zoom exterior styling and driver orientated interior seen on the MX-Crossport concept car.

The MX-Crossport concept will be a star attraction at the 2006 Melbourne International Motor Show, which kicks off early February.

First seen at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this year, MX Crossport is currently on display at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The CX-7 will sit above the Tribute range, becoming Mazda's second entrant into the popular Australian SUV market.

Mazda's CX-7, to be built in Japan from next year, will initially be sold in North America.

"Adding the CX-7 to our existing Tribute range in the all-important SUV market is an important step for Mazda Australia as it enables us to further grow the business and showcase our Stylish, Insightful and Spirited brand DNA beyond our class leading core models", said the managing director of Mazda Australia, Doug Dickson.

"Having the MX Crossport on our stand at the Melbourne motor show will give prospective customers a great opportunity to appreciate the benchmark styling and packaging we can expect from the Mazda CX-7".

In Mazda's new global naming strategy, crossover-type, sport utility vehicles will carry the CX designation - as in Mazda CX-7; rotary-engined sports cars carry the RX designation (RX-8) and piston-engined sports cars carry the MX designation, such as MX-5.

Core production vehicles will continue to carry the name 'Mazda' and a number, based on vehicle size (Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6); Tribute, MPV and B-Series will continue with their current nomenclature until further notice.
